Tamagotchi makes a comeback as ‘Tamagotchi Friends’

Tamagotchi, pocketable playground craze and scourge of teachers across the land, is back.

The interactive toy has been re-launched to celebrate selling over 80 million units since its inception 17 years back.

The all new Tamagotchi Friends retains its iconic look, but features new technology.

Inside is a short-range communication function so you can “bump” other enthusiastic Tamagotchi Friends and send text messages, swap gifts and even go on a date.

The more you bump the more points and rewards are earned, while your best friends meter increases.

So, with five new characters, a pause function (music to the ears of those driven slightly insane by the incessant needs of its predecessor) and an on/off sound button (more music to the same ears) and interaction with the new tamagotchifreinds.com website it all looks set to cause quite some fuss when it launches this Boxing Day.

For those not in the know this whole Tamagotchi thing involves nurturing an electronic “pet”.

Owners must feed it food when it’s hungry, give it medicine when it’s sick, clean up after its been to the toilet and play games to earn ‘Gotchi’ points which are used to buy meals, snacks and jewellery in the shop.

We’re even thinking of adopting one here at Toyology Towers this time around.
