SmartPlane – the world’s first smartphone piloted plane

There are lots of smartphone controlled helicopters on the market at the moment, but until now there was no such thing as a smartphone controlled plane.

Swooping in to take the honour of ‘world’s first smartphone plane’ is SmartPlane, the product of some nifty German engineering from new toy company TobyRich.

The lightweight SmartPlane is designed primarily for indoor flying. Its body is made from light yet durable Epp material (which stands for expanded polypropylene plastic foam, if you’re asking) and because of its lightweight properties, SmartPlane flys at a more leisurely pace than regular remote controlled planes. This makes it fun and safe to take to the skies indoors, however even outside in calm conditions, there are no limits to the flying fun.

Check out the video below to see it in action.

SmartPlane connects to users’ smartphones via Bluetooth and is then steered by simply tilting the paired device. Altitude and speed are controlled with the thumb by swiping up and down on the throttle lever, so the toy can be piloted with one hand. The SmartPlane app – which is a free download from the Apple iTunes store – also shows horizon orientation, battery status and signal strength, adding to the cockpit experience.

The plane is charged via Micro USB and is currently compatible with iPhone 4S, iPhone 5 and iPod touch 5th Generation or newer, iPad 3rd Generation and up, and iPad Mini.

SmartPlane comes fully assembled and ready to fly, and is available for £59.00 from Amazon.
