Scrabble adds a few new tricks

The shout out for the public to submit their own fiendish ideas to make Scrabble Trickster even trickier has resulted in five new elements of play added to the latest version. With the Scrabble purists already up in arms with Trickster V1.0 allowing  in playing words backwards, using celebrity names and nicking other players tiles they’ll be foaming at the mouth now.  The new rules that can be brought into force when a trick tile is placed were selected from over 1,500 suggestions and go like this :

Text speak – use acronyms such as like OMG or LOL.
Double scores for anadromes – words which make another word when spelt backwards such as Spam/Maps.
Pass – offload an undesirable tile to an opponent.
Replace – swap any one tile on the board with one of your own to steal the points.
Challenge – a challenge where opponents try to beat the score of the card-holder.

Think it easy enough to name three breeds of dog or three brands of chocolate? Well good, this game might well be right up your street. Did we mention in this game you’ve only FIVE seconds to do so? You may well think you can, it’s certainly easy enough, but we gave you time to mull over the categories. Under pressure, can you deliver the right answers without ridiculous ones slipping out with one eye on the shortest timer in board game history? There are extra game play cards that add to the frenzied game play and put pressure on other players, and all this inside five seconds. Voted best new toy earlier this year 5 Second Rule from University Games is for fast thinking, quick talkers – A great family game or one for a night-in-with-friends – We’re precious about our Toyology Gold Award’s but 5 Second Rule grabs one for fun, “unputdownability” grin inducing capability and, most of all, it’s appeal to a massive age range – 5-105. Well done

Time for Tennis

Unsettled weather and the chance of showers can only mean one thing, that’s it folk, Wimbledon gets started today. It’s a two week celebration of the Brits ability to queue for prolonged periods, consume vast amouts of overpriced strawberries and ice cream and live in a bubble in which there is a belief that a home grown player might actually win.  If you’re no where near SW19 and want to join in with this most prestigious of tournaments more actively that just tuning in on TV we’ve rounded up a couple of toys for all ages to enjoy.

Place the two tennis paddles on the play mat, set the frog at the centre and service can begin. By pressing the buttons on each “racquets” handle it’ll “thwack” the electronic frog noisily over to your opponent. It’s simple childish fun, first to five wins, £10 HERE

This is a Summer staple at Toyology Towers, each year we donate our old one to whoever is passing by and doesn’t give us an odd look and run away, then we liberate our new one from it’s box. The Swingball range from Mookie includes some fine variants on the classic, there’s even a tehered football set in the range now, our set of choice rfemains this All Surface Set. All the contents pack away into the base so your can Swingball anywhere, the height is adjustable and so ideal for everyone, £25 HERE – Guaranteed to get everyone involved.

The Soft play tennis kit is superb for a bit of beach based or back garden tennis fun without any concerns that either player can get carried away, attempt a smash shot and cause atrip to casualty. Eech set comes with a nifty carry handle to keep all the parts together, only £6 over this way.

And last up is the Pro Swingball set, the folk at play in our pic show it’s slightly more serious nature, we’re sure the bloke has a steely determined grin on his face. This set uses ballast in the base to keep it in one place and features a score counter at the base to ensure fair play. They’ve included a newbit at the top o the pole on this one, it is called a Windicator and when the victor reaches the top it flies into the air, way better then the regular pop-up, you could even add bonus points if you can catch it.
