Toyology

We’ve been wandering about at the Licencing show this morning, picking up free keyrings, hoping for better stuff to secrete about our person, lets you know how we get on later. just heard that Character Options, the outfit with some of the finest toy licences in the UK (Peppa Pig, Fireman Sam, Postman Pat, ZhuZhu, Dr Who etc) have bagged a deal with the BBC to produce playthings based on the ever popular show Deadly 60. For those unaware of the program it is fronted by Steve Backshall who travels to globe looking for animals to put into his Deadly 60 list, if they are dangerous but are not performing on-screen he usually antagonises them, all for our entertainment, and we love him. We’ll see Micro Deadlies hit the shelves in Spring 2012 and five play-sets,also in developmentare construction blocks and mini figures for January with role-play toys (?)  and action figures further down the two year agreement line.

We haven’t made it over to Florida to see the new Legoland, yet, but if this installation is a taste of their “think big” policy we might well put it on our tour map,one day less at Disney and Universal. It took a team of 22 chaps in Florida about 2500 hours with 380,000 bricks to build this Explorer which will be displayed in front of one of the new park’s attractions, the Ford Driving School (messy collisions there we think, but easyand cheap fixes).

They’re a very visual lot those playthings aren’t they, but we thought we’d try out a media platform where toys weren’t getting an airing. We approached the UK’s leading  parent and kid focused radio station to ask for a Toyology slot. The lovely people at Fun Kids radio said we could have tuesdays at 6:45pm and we said YEEEEEEEES. There are over 300,000 people across the UK tuning in every month on their DAB radios and also online and it infally confirms our status bestowed upon us by a few individuals of having “faces for radio” – FOr you 80′s kids check out this link to the Donna Summer classic tune that’s ben in our heads since securing our place on-air.

Nearly christmas?

It’s that time of year again where we start getting inundated with people’s predictions of what are going to be the must have toys this Christmas. And, while we do like to consider ourselves somewhat of an authority on the subject, we also like to take other people’s views into account as well. Because we are nice like that.

So we look through the lists, and we look some more, and sometimes we see that they look pretty good.

Littlewoods have put together their Christmas top ten, and there are some sure fire winners in there. The Millenium Falcon (YES PLEASE!), the new Monopoly Electric Live (of course) and the Hello Kitty Coupe Pram (maybe) are all in there. But top of the list is the Innotab, and this is where we see a sure hit.

What with the disturbing fact that young’uns we know, as young as three, are more able with the latest technology than us someone in the toy market has cottoned onto the fact that adults all over the world are in desperate need of a way to keep their tablet computer screens clean. And whilst screen cleaner does exist, prevention is better than cure. And this is where the toy tablet comes into its own. We’re interested to see what competitors will hit the market in time for the festivities.

Calling all LEGO lovers with an interest in Space -  you really should clear your diary for this Saturday (3rd Sep) as a LEGO CITY space workshop event is on up at the National Space Centre. It’s hosted by our favourite Professor, the one and only Heinz Wolff who’ll be joined by a top LEGO designer to give kids an insight into what its like working for one of the top toy manufaturers in the Universe.

People who can complete a Rubik’s cube. Evil genius’ or freak of nature?

We’d tend to lean to the former – apart from the man we see on our morning commute who insists on playing incessantly with his Rubik’s cube, which he completes every single time and clearly only brings with him in the vain hope that someone someday will tell him how amazing he is and ask him for the secret of the Rubik’s universe, but we’re not fooling for that oh no, we’ve perfected the scowl and turn away now and we are not backing down.

Where were we?

Oh right yes, those clever chaps who can do the Rubik’s (it’s a bit like doing the Bartman) have been pitted against one another at the US Championships and flying the flag for Great Britain was Scottish Breandan Vallance who did us proud. The reigning champion’s victory was a much needed ego boost ahead of the World Rubik’s Cube Championships which take place 14-16 October in Bangkok. The question is, will he retain his title?

Following on from the recent deal with Saville Row tailor Richard James Spongebob is branching out already to ensure his fashion sense is spread acrossmany garment genres. Here’s the latest, a new pair of Spongebob sunglasses, created by celebrity favourites Nunettes, styles to date sported by 50 Cent and Lady GaGa and portray the eyes of the Bikini Bottom dwelling porous one in a wide awake state. These spectacles are fashioned by perforating and colouring the lenses, we’re looking forward to laughing at together with the first person we see wearing them.

Rubiks Cruise

Whilst travelling down the Suez canal it has long ben a tradition of the Royal Navy to raise some cash for worthy causes whilst making the journey. During it’s recent traverse along the waterway aboard the HMS Enterprise one LCIS “Rolly” Roulston managed to complete the Rubik Cube 574 times in 10.5 hours raising money for the ships charity the Primrose Cancer Care ward at Derriford Hospital Plymouth. This chap only took up the cube in his mid 30′s and now ranks 90th in the world, so people of the world, it is never too late to get your grey matter around this most iconic and irritating of cubes.
