Toyology

It took us a while getting around to building our LEGO Technic Bucket Truck, that’s cherry picker to most of us or elevated platform to those perhaps allergic to cherries or very posh indeed. It’s the machine used to rig up local Christmas lights or fix street lights, very clever  vehicles they are too. Just like its real life ride this Bucket Truck has a set of gears to raise and rotate the platform on the back, two more gears let you deploy the outriggers at the side of the vehicle to keep it stable when the platform is fully extended; and a large gear knob on the rear even lets you steer it. With all of these functions in mind, and of course the nifty looking design, this rig is as much fun to build as it is to assemble and so we pay homage with our 10th, and final Toyology Gold of the year. Around £40 at John Lewis

Before you begin the stampede to your cinema, it’ s actually the 18th May, but “Jack is Nearly Back” looked like a pretty poor headline to us. The perma-sozzled High sea’s tripper returns in Pirates of the Caribbean on Stranger Tides, on the search or the fountain of Youth, battling the King’s men, Zombies, Mermaids and Blackbeard, excited? Yes us too. No need to hang about Mi’Hearties, grab yourself a 1,094 piece Queen Anne’s Revenge, a LEGO build that’s grabbed itself a coveted Toyology Gold award for sheer brilliance. The set includes large sails, lanterns, fire elements of all sizes, and bone detailing about the deck with SEVEN minifigures Blackbeard, Jack Sparrow, Angelica, Quartermaster, a Cook and a pair of Zombie Pirates. So, when you’ve completed this epic build, and admired it for a while, get stuck in and mess with the detachable Captains quarter (detail inside here is superb), three firing cannons, moving anchor and plenty of other bits to play about with as you await you call from Angelica (Penelope Cruz) – This set you back £102.99 HERE,  a fair few pieces of eight this far from Yule yes, but we think well worth it, and are certain there’ll be non left by then mi’Skurvies so set sail without haste to ye olde checkout.

What’s the opposite of Pop?

There’s no two ways about it, this is one good looking pig. He’s got a smiley face, bright eyes and a neckachief that’s bang on trend. But, and this is a big but considering the name of the game, he does not go pop.

I so want to love this game – so much so that I played it three times before accepting the inevitable; but unfortunately this 21st century Buckaroo/Pop up Pirate wannabe just doesn’t do what it says on the tin.

Toyology’s Top Toy of 2007

Well folk what a year it has been, we’ve been finger blistered playing with all the goodies that have hit the shelves this year and 2008 looks even better (which we’ll tell you about after Toy Fair at the end of Jan). But from the hundreds of toys we have had the pleasure of reviewing these past 12 months have selected our two favourites. Its been tough, we’ve loved loads of LEGO, many movie licensed playthings, TV toys and classic handmade kit like Automoblox but there can only be two to make the final cut. For the boys it is the Flytech Dragonfly for its sheer unputdownability when placed in the hand and the girls have the remote control My Scene Barbie for having such longevity, attributes important to adults and kids alike. A Happy new Year to one and all… we look forward to a fun packed 2008.
