Toyology

Because there are not yet enough Angry Birds products, we thought we would bring to you on a somewhat murky Friday morn, the latest incarnation of the foul tempered fowls (see what we did there? Yes we know they’re not technically chickens, they are just non descript birds that are angry, but it’s Friday and we’re trying so leave it out).

So here is the Angry Birds Action Game, ta da! And it’s a whopper at a metre wide – check out that superimposed 100cm image for proof if you don’t believe us.

Still, despite the unnecessary sarcasm , this game does actually get the thumbs up from us and ten bonus points for attempting to recreate the actual premise of the much loved app. Play it indoors or out, you build you wooden shack and pelt the pig with your squidgy beanbag style birdy and score some points. Brilliant. Available to pre-order for £24.99 here

Still, there really are probably enough Angry Birds spin offs now..

They’re a very visual lot those playthings aren’t they, but we thought we’d try out a media platform where toys weren’t getting an airing. We approached the UK’s leading  parent and kid focused radio station to ask for a Toyology slot. The lovely people at Fun Kids radio said we could have tuesdays at 6:45pm and we said YEEEEEEEES. There are over 300,000 people across the UK tuning in every month on their DAB radios and also online and it infally confirms our status bestowed upon us by a few individuals of having “faces for radio” – FOr you 80′s kids check out this link to the Donna Summer classic tune that’s ben in our heads since securing our place on-air.

We’re predicting that in a few short weeks, teachers desk drawers the world over are going to be full of Morbs.

This playground craze waiting to happen appears to be just a very cute looking alien chap, but give him a chuck across and just watch him go. It’s like a big ol’ bouncy ball but with collectable appeal and accessories;  we particularly like this little guy who comes with his very own super sonic jet, which even fires missiles.

And for the major Morb lovers among you, the big set in the range in the Battle Fortress, which comes complete with a cannon for Morb enemy attacks. Awesome.

People who can complete a Rubik’s cube. Evil genius’ or freak of nature?

We’d tend to lean to the former – apart from the man we see on our morning commute who insists on playing incessantly with his Rubik’s cube, which he completes every single time and clearly only brings with him in the vain hope that someone someday will tell him how amazing he is and ask him for the secret of the Rubik’s universe, but we’re not fooling for that oh no, we’ve perfected the scowl and turn away now and we are not backing down.

Where were we?

Oh right yes, those clever chaps who can do the Rubik’s (it’s a bit like doing the Bartman) have been pitted against one another at the US Championships and flying the flag for Great Britain was Scottish Breandan Vallance who did us proud. The reigning champion’s victory was a much needed ego boost ahead of the World Rubik’s Cube Championships which take place 14-16 October in Bangkok. The question is, will he retain his title?

We’ve been championing this new toy genre since early in the year, and may well have mentioned a few “coming soon” products over the past months. First to market though are the apptoyz brand with their incredible appBlaster, it sets a new standard in Augmented Reality gaming and makes any walk much more fun (check out the video, its there to your right). They’ve more games to come that are compatible with the blaster and have teased us about the imminent arrival of appCopter and appRacer. Both feature an RC module that’llplug into your iOS device 3.5mm socket and, together with the downloadable app turn your handset into a fully functional remote controland utilise the accelerometer to enable tilt control.  About the best £20 quid you can spend.

The penchant for hosting “Xmas in July” events started a while back, it is a great way to allow publications to get a sneak preview of all that’s on offer for the Yule ahead. Everyone wants to be first to get their  lists out however and now July has snuck itself into June, Tesco showed us their top ten toys at the beginning of June, today it’s Hamleys turn. Thankfully this list has been much better thought through and not so yawn inducing and certainly only the merest whiff of “We’d better make sure we shift this lot, lets stick it in a top ten” – In fact, we’d probably concur with over half of it, but can’t admit how much over a half as we’ve decided to make our own list this year. Yes folks, we’re going to put the proverbial cat amongst the pigeons host a live online Xmas in December event, watch this space. For earlybird buyers though, here’s the Hamleys Top Ten for the coming Christasm as revealed earlier today.

Not due to hit the shelves till September we’ve found an image of the next line-up in the minifigure series. Taking the pocket money market by storm since inception the next batch (series 5)  doesn’t disappoint, we rather favour the British Foot Guard complete with bearskin. Cheers Brickshow

Let the Battle Commence

Now at first glance we couldn’t help but htink that these Beyblade thingamebobs were some new fangled 21st century Spinning Top…

…oh but it’s so much more than that.

First off: you can fight with them.

The new range of Beybledes allows you to customise, collect and compete with crazy add ons and words we can’t even pronounce all designed to make yours invincible.

Ripcord Launchers and Fusion Wheels might sound like something out of Star Trek but you’ll need to get accustomed to the Beyblades dictionary if you want to stand a chance at winning.

They’re the kind of thing that are strangely addictive anyway and now they’ve had some flashy lights and colours thrown onto them too to make them even more hypnotic – the Super Stadium is bound to be a huge hit this Christmas and with prices starting at just £7.99 they’re a great stocking filler too.
