Get real!

The name ‘Realism’ doesn’t exactly spring off the Toys R Us (or another similar retailer, there are plenty of others you know) shelves, grab you and scream ‘FUN!’ in your face. When we reveal that this is a game based on finances and stocks and shares, that’s probably not going to do much to change that. But the object of the game is to become a millionaire Rodney, so it must be good!

It’s a little ‘Game of Life’-esque in that each player gets a job, can buy life insurance and the like, even mortgage actually. But added in is the purchasing of property and shares and the building up of assets. Billed as a game for age 10+ as a great way to learn the fundamentals of investment, which considering the y’know current fiscal sitch (situation) and the ongoing debate that children aren’t taught nowt about money in schools, is probably a pretty good idea.

We’ll be honest, at £34.99 here it’s a bit of an investment in itself, but the idea is good and we’re slightly dubious about the idea that you can “enjoy the thrill of the financial rollercoaster”, but what the hell, we were getting bored of Ker-Plunk anyway.

Because there are not yet enough Angry Birds products, we thought we would bring to you on a somewhat murky Friday morn, the latest incarnation of the foul tempered fowls (see what we did there? Yes we know they’re not technically chickens, they are just non descript birds that are angry, but it’s Friday and we’re trying so leave it out).

So here is the Angry Birds Action Game, ta da! And it’s a whopper at a metre wide – check out that superimposed 100cm image for proof if you don’t believe us.

Still, despite the unnecessary sarcasm , this game does actually get the thumbs up from us and ten bonus points for attempting to recreate the actual premise of the much loved app. Play it indoors or out, you build you wooden shack and pelt the pig with your squidgy beanbag style birdy and score some points. Brilliant. Available to pre-order for £24.99 here

Still, there really are probably enough Angry Birds spin offs now..

It’s almost like there are some kind of British and sport themed events ahead this year the way toys of these themes keep popping up… Still, we have a soft spot for retro simple toy Carddies anyway, so we forgive them.

If you’re not familiar with the award winning toy, it’s easy peasy: characters are printed onto card, littl’uns colour ‘em in, stand them up and presto – play time begins. As most parents will no doubt recognise, from Christmas mornings spend putting together horrible fiddly electronic crazy gizmo type toys before realising that their offspring prefers the box it came in, simplicity can often win out, and that is the secret of the success with this range.

With the new British and Sports themed sets released just in time for well, you know, new additions can play with old favourites and your child expands their Carddies collection, which already includes Cavemen, School and Knights sets among others. And as an added bonus they’re only £8.99 making them a pocket friendly treat for those extra bank holiday days off when it’s no doubt chucking it down with rain. Cynical, us? Never. You can get them here and also here.

There is something deeply satisfying about creating stop-motion films, one of the reasons is that its time consuming, the other is that the end result is deeply rewarding. LEGO have rolled out their iPhone app that’ll let you use your LEGO DC Universe Super Heroes figures and sets to create fiilms that are certain to go viral.  LEGO describe the app as follows “Simple tools and guides make it easy to shoot, edit, even score your movie with music”. “Add one of the customisable title cards and share it online and who knows, you may have the next summer blockbuster in your hands.” Well perhaps, at the very least you’ll ave a film that you can make as wildly ludicrous, hilarious and downright daft as you like. We thinkit is imperative that you should dream up storylines that involve other LEGO sets, girls from LEGO Friends as love interests, LEGO NXT as the havoc wreaking creature looking to take over earth – you get the picture. We are, according to the Guardian, running low on Helium and one scientist in particular is putting the blame squarely on the party balloon industry and, that’ll now include our favourite flyers the Air Swimmers. Pressure on stocks aren’t likely to let up anytime soon from our end, we’re eagerly awaiting the arrival of the Bass and Whale version of these surreal R/C’s – Air Swimmers are the only brand that’ll not have you trying to cancel your credit card transaction. Here’s an Angry Bird version too (pictured) selling only in the US righ now, looking forward to a video with a few of them appearing on-screen, despite it making little sense it’s tail flaps and not the wings, it’s forgiven. Anyhow, use your helium responsibly with our top inert gas tips – Do not extract for voice pitch rising purposes, top up your floating fish with a straw every couple of days to keep it high on the buoyancy scale and fly constantly with friends taking shifts 24/7 to get max flying time from this precious resource. You’ll be hearing and seeing plenty more about the LEGO(R) DC Universe Super Heroes range over the coming weeks as it hits the shelves, we’ve uncovered it on the virtual aisles on pre-order at Firebox and thought a heads-up was only fair so you could try and save some cash. Our favourite by far is the Batcave set, complete with Bane and his drilling machine trying to rescue Poison Ivy whilst Batman and Robin try and stop him – you decide who prevails. The set lets you transform Bruce into Batman as he travels down in the lift, it has a Batcycle included, the Drill Tank has flick missiles and there are a raft of other accessories to justoifyb the £70 price tag, but wait, what’s that, Holy Bargain Basement Batman, the range starts at about £10 with a Catwoman on a motorcycle….Can you resist her lure? We’re also keen to get our mitts on a Superman minifig, looks the business….

Launched in Vegas this week into what is likely to be the biggest toy genre for 2012 the AppGear range is an evolution from the iOS “appcessories” we saw last year from AppToyz with the unputdownable AppBlaster. These Augmented Reality toys herald the beginning of a raft of toy launches in this area over the coming weeks but Wowwee are first out of the blocks with theirs, and mighty impressive they look too. A range of six is set to be unleashed in the next month, each game requires a physical purchase and then a download of the free app, and happily they all support iOS and Android.

The titles are Alien Jailbreak, Zombie Burb, Elite Commander, Foam Fighter, Akodomon and Mysterious Ray Gun – Look through your smart device and virtual worlds appear in your room, there is little doubt these will, at between £10 and £20, be a sensation. Beware people walking around with toys attached to their mobiles, an increase in lamp post related incidenets is certain to ensue the release of these games. A question to Wowwee if we may though, is the Mysterious Ray Gun so named as it is a mystery to what this particular product is actually about? More Videos of the range in action this way please….

We’ve been treated to a fair few Scalextric licences over the years, James bond ones were pretty good, Toy Story didn;t float our slot-car racing boat, this pair of beauties has us grinning from ear to ear. Why we’ve had to wait for so long to get Star Wars and Scalexctric to tema up Darth only knows, and frankly we don;t give a Yoda because it’s finally happening – Exactly when we’re no sure. So, we have the Micro 1:64 scale Death Star Attack set with a Lord Vader Tie Fighter battling a Luke Skywalker X-Wing, the spaceships have working lights and the track has a glow-in-the-dark print for late night missions. Then, well this is the one that’ll have pre-order buttons ablaze when we find out when/where/how much, the 1:32 scale Battle of Endor, a 4.3 metre track with woodland features and accessories and Luke Skywalker and Scout Trooper aboard a pair of Speed Bike There is also the promise of more sets and solo vehicles to add to your Star Wars track, Like this all very much we do.

Our memories of Airfix are of getting our fingers stuck together and using as much paint on ourselves as on the models, the most enduring recollection however was the utter satisfaction of placing our completed creation in its pride of place. This year Airfix are releasing over 60 new models, we struggled to select a favourite but decided the Cutty Sark tall ship would be our re-introduction to model construction. Check out the line up HERE

One hundred years ago today, on December 14th, 1911, the Norwegian Roald Amundsen and four companions trudged through fog, bitter cold and lacerating winds and stood at the absolute bottom of the world, the South Pole. We don’t even fancy getting our hands too cold, and with snow set to start falling in northern parts of our fair Isle today we’re thinking it best to get loaded up with kit.We gave our highest accolade to a snowball blaster the other week, the same outfit also have this slightly more manual snowbvall launcher, which is ideal for the flanks if you’ve built up a small snowball attack unit. The Arctic Launcher TracBall has a snow scoop which you then use to compact ypour ammo into the ideal sphere so it goes further/faster and hopefully on target too.
