Team GB in the Lego Olympics

Team GB Minifigs: Proudly posing

See Team GB at a John Lewis, Argos, Tesco, WH Smiths, Smyths or Toys R Us from July 1st!

The official Lego minifig team, that is! The new nine collectible Lego Olympic athletes are racing into shops to win gold in kids’ play rooms and commemorate the London 2012 Games.

The detailing is exquisite on the £1.99 figures. The Stealth Swimmer is wearing his medal with droplets still wet from the pool and the Relay Runner has sweat on his brow and a baton in his hand.

They join the Brawny Boxer, Judo Fighter, Tactical Tennis Player, Flexible Gymnast, Wondrous Weightlifter, Horseback Rider and Agile Archer.

Prepare for the return of Furby

Cast your minds back to the late 90′s, the first coming of this hamster/owl hybrid robotic toy with its very own launguage – Furbish. It was a bit of a breakthrough back then, learning, over time to replace its Furbish chatter with English words, that’s it, YOU talk the little cute critters to speaky the lingo. We’ve learnt that they’re making a return, the image suggests that the moving facial parts have been entirely replaced by and LCD screen, and that folks is all we have for you. We’re currently doing the rounds of Furby forums and liastening out for rumours and/or factual chatter from insiders which we’ll update on Twitter with #furbyreturns – follow us @toyologist

Oh there really is nothing like a massive, exorbitantly priced robot is there. This is BB Metal. He is three feet tall. He costs £699.95. He is awesome. And you know it.

Rather coolly it is made out of recycled car and bike parts – so you can feel like you’re doing your bit of course, this is an eco-friendly type purchase with green credentials. Because of this of course he’s not brand spankingly new and shiny, so don’t be disappointed when you open the box and see a pile of dirty, old spare car parts – the beauty here is in the design and innovation friends. And the size. THREE FEET. That’s taller than our office minions!

In case you’re still wavering.. hovering over the purchase button here we’ve come up with a handy list of uses for ol’ BB:

1. Guard dog

2. Butler

3. Coat stand

4. Conversation starter

5. Robot model

See, the options really are endless.

Lego grows up

Looking like it rolled straight out of an Aardman Wallace and Gromit production, the Big Ben piece de resistance of the new Lego Architecture range is certainly a bit different to what we usually get from the block building experts.

Softer than usual, more delicate and more realistic the range focuses not just on the building but the story behind the iconic landmarks in its range. From the Empire State Building to the Sydney Opera House and the Brandenburg Gate, it’s like a round the world trip in a toy store and we are more than a bit taken with the collection.

While die hard Lego fans may not appreciate the deviation from Harry Potter franchises, ninjas and space aliens, this could be just exactly what is needed to the ageing Lego fan who still wants to enjoy the product but can no longer justify to the wife why the Millenium Falcon Lego series still gets to sit on the mantlepiece..

Iceberg, right ahead!

Did you know there was a massive whacking great lump of a ship that was never supposed to sink and then it, well, did. And it happened 100 years ago? No. Well join the hareem of people on Twitter who this week admitted that they thought the Titanic was just a film not an actual historical event. Shambolic.

If you are one of those people, we urge you to immediately go out and purchase this rather fantasmagorical air fix model of the legendary vessel herself and do some historical re-enactments and some serious Google based learning to make up for lost time.

On a more serious note, it is indeed a century since the ill fated liner met her fate in the north Atlantic and while the box office rakes in many dollars with a re-release Airfix have, we feel, gone one better by creating a 1:1400 scale (it was really rather huge after all) replica model of the ship, made up of 381 pieces.

And if you don’t think you’ll get your model all fitted together in time there is slightly smaller version at a 1:1700 scale to consider (priced at £49.99 and £24.99). We’ve got our paintbrushes all ready to pay homage on the 14th.

Ultimate Artoo unveiled by LEGO

Hands down the most famous droid in the galaxy, we were bowled over earlier this year with the Bladez inflatable remote control version and now LEGO have left us open-mouthed into the weekend. Unleashing this Ultimate collector series 2100 piece R2D2 with its realistic rotating head and retractable third leg allows us to forgive it for not projecting a holographic Princess Leia. It’s available from LEGO.com in May at a price of about $250, no word on whether we’ll get one here in Blighty, time to book an American break me thinks.

Steady Eddie

As if Eddie Stobart wasn’t getting enough publicity at the moment what with that god awful programme following one of the driver’s around that keeps getting featured on Harry Hill’s TV Burp…urg. Well, now everyone’s favourite haulage truck has been immortalised in our favourite form – toy form, of course.

Launching at the end of the month to mark the first anniversary of Eddie Stobart’s death the set consists of two types of the iconic trucks. For the mega fans among you they are the Scania 4 Series with Curtainside Trailer and the Scania III ‘Julia’. For the less die hard fans this translates roughly as model big lorry and slightly different model big lorry.

Available from Hornby from 31 March, we’re just working out how much freight we can fit in them…

We have seen a few 3D puzzlesover the past months, these new ones from Wrebbit (we’ll get to the bottom of that name creation soon) are these landmark builds, each one a 750 piece plus affair, not easy by any means but deeply satisfying when finished. From the Taj Mahal to Big Ben there’s a few to choose from and are about the biggest in their class, and priced between £20-£40 when launched in June over at Amazon.
