Toyology

Oh there really is nothing like a massive, exorbitantly priced robot is there. This is BB Metal. He is three feet tall. He costs £699.95. He is awesome. And you know it.

Rather coolly it is made out of recycled car and bike parts – so you can feel like you’re doing your bit of course, this is an eco-friendly type purchase with green credentials. Because of this of course he’s not brand spankingly new and shiny, so don’t be disappointed when you open the box and see a pile of dirty, old spare car parts – the beauty here is in the design and innovation friends. And the size. THREE FEET. That’s taller than our office minions!

In case you’re still wavering.. hovering over the purchase button here we’ve come up with a handy list of uses for ol’ BB:

1. Guard dog

2. Butler

3. Coat stand

4. Conversation starter

5. Robot model

See, the options really are endless.

Sir, yes sir!

If, when you leave the house of a morning, you really want to feel confident that your books and/or doors are being well guarded.. we can’t think of a better reassurance than having your own little army guy on duty.

Reminiscent of the chaps out of the Toy Story films the ‘Home Guard’ book end/door stop is just the right amount of novelty for the home, we feel. And someone to salute to when you come in of an evening too, who doesn’t want that?

Standing at almost 19cm tall and weight in at a hefty 1.125kg they should be more than capable of propping up all your Dostoevsky and Tolstoy… Not badly priced either at £25 from here

Feel the Fourth Luke

Amongst our favourite days of the year is this one that has been hijacked by Star Wars fans (and purveyors of all things Star Wars – who started it?). The Twittersphere is trending #starwarsday #starwars #maythefourth, fan boys and girls will be pulling sickies to stay home and watch boxsets, those going to work will be discussing their favourite moments from the series and those who have never watched a single Star Wars will be ridiculed all day with comments such as “never watched a Star Wars you have not”.  To celebrate this major excuse to do anything Star Wars based we have a competition, we’re going to celebrate this May the 4th or Star Wars day by giving away two sets of spanking new LEGO® Star Wars™ sets – To win, we want your best Star Wars joke, read on……

Lego grows up

Looking like it rolled straight out of an Aardman Wallace and Gromit production, the Big Ben piece de resistance of the new Lego Architecture range is certainly a bit different to what we usually get from the block building experts.

Softer than usual, more delicate and more realistic the range focuses not just on the building but the story behind the iconic landmarks in its range. From the Empire State Building to the Sydney Opera House and the Brandenburg Gate, it’s like a round the world trip in a toy store and we are more than a bit taken with the collection.

While die hard Lego fans may not appreciate the deviation from Harry Potter franchises, ninjas and space aliens, this could be just exactly what is needed to the ageing Lego fan who still wants to enjoy the product but can no longer justify to the wife why the Millenium Falcon Lego series still gets to sit on the mantlepiece..

What hosepipe ban?

What do you mean it’s snowing in some parts of the country? It’s nearly summer! And we do so so love love LOVE a water pistol,  nay, cannon!

And you just know it’s going to be powerful when it needs its own tripod.

It gets better too. Gone are the days of getting a good soaking from the enemy while you race for the tap to refill your empty vessel – this thing simply connects straight to your hosepipe for easy, constant, relentless action.  Ohhh we are excited.

Standing over a metre high with a range of up to 100ft this summer must-have is not even going to set you back too much. We’ve scouted it for as little as £24.99 here … just, don’t forget the hosepipe ban, yeah?

Descender is right on track

Honestly, what person doesn’t secretly harbour a desire to drive a tank? No one. FACT.

Now you can (almost) bring the dream alive with this new and frankly amazing creation. The Descender. It’s a skateboard, but it is so much more than a skateboard.

Does anyone remember those crazy things called Snakeboards from circa 1995? Well they sucked. No one ever looked cool on a Snakeboard. This is so not the case here. Firstly it looks both exciting and deadly, secondly this is an ALL TERRAIN vehicle; you can go anywhere, anytime. Well, maybe not through quicksand, but that’s almost never an issue.

It’s made by Rockboard, and the patent is currently pending, and they have a couple of other fancy products on their books too but this is truly the most exciting. Sadly it’s not yet available, and the price of its sister products leads us to believe it’s not going to be the cheapest thing you’ll buy this year. But, did you see the tracks it’s on!?

Da na na na na na na na, na na na na na na na…You get the idea..

And if you don’t, here’s a bit more information… This latest craze of stow and go RC’s has been truly embraced with the range of ‘Stealth Rides’ from Hot Wheels and needless to say the Batmobile is our favourite (although, to be fair, the tank does come a very close second).

Now those clever chaps at Hot Wheels have gone and teamed up with the cool cats of Gotham City to produce this rather nifty little vehicle. The Stealth Rides Batmobile is not only a speed demon it can fold flat enough to fit in your pocket. We’re yet to find a real use for this particular attribute, but we’re excited nonetheless.

Although it’s from the 2010 range people are currently going crazy for this statement RC, which simply requires three batteries, some talent.. and possibly an Ebay account; they’re selling like bat shaped hotcakes (expensive ones). But with the imminent release of Dark Knight Rises, any super fan will be buying a spare seat to the premiere for their RC this summer.

Taking Liberty

If you’re planning a trip to the capital this coming Easter break may we guide you to visit Liberty London on Regent Street. They’ve just opened a new kids clothing department and, to celebrate, have transformed two of their windows with a Meccano space models and, if you venture inside you’ll find a specially commissioned 500 piece Meccano chandelier lighting up the new department.

Heroine Katniss sports a bow and arrow, and does plenty of damage with her accuracy in the UK release of the blockbuster Hunger Games today. Since opening in the US kids (of all ages) have been signing up for lessons at Archery clubs, that’s far too faddy for us, just pick up the finest toy bow/arrow kit around in the shape of the fine Z-Curve launcher and have yourself some grin inducing fun. A couple of round-nosed projectiles that easily reach 80 feet and a sucker dart that’ll pretty much latch on to any flat surface (foreheads not included), we predict a sell-out week ahead, we already have ours, click above and grab yours with haste.

Signing its third licencing deal with gaming firm Ubisoft (Gears of War and Sonic in the bag already) we’re now looking forward to  Meccano creating a range that’ll include the Rabbids’ crazy toilet complete with flushing sound effects and pullback motor, a time travelling washing machine with motorised spin, a working catapult with splat mat target and surreal racing shopping trolley complete as well as a variety of figures. Come on, hurry up and get them on the shelves.
